I went skating yesterday. I meant to go running, but the thin sheet of ice on all the paved trails near my house forced me to tread carefully until I got to the dirt trails a mile away.
I need advice for ice running, so please send ideas. I do have some of those nifty thingys you slip on the soles of your shoes for snow, but they seem a bit spiky for bare pavement. I'm afraid I'll screw up my knees if I run 4 or 5 miles in them without the cushion of the snow.
Meanwhile, look what I found at the bottom of my snow gear box! It's my wool North Face headband from 1989. Stylish, and upside down to boot. Hey, it works.
I don't really want to run in the gym, so I will attempt to stay outside this winter as much as I can. Who's in?

Footzone will "screw your shoes" for 5 bucks. You'd need to sacrifice an almost worn out pair of shoes and designate them solely for winter running. You wouldn't want to do it to a new pair. They'll screw 3/8" sheet metal screws into your shoes and they work well on ice, really well in the snow and not bad on bare road.
It'll cost like 58 cents though if you do it at home with your trusty power drill. That's what I did and I love 'em.
This is Fawndue by the way. I don't know why it says OR.
Excellent advice, Fawndue. Power drills scare me a bit, $5 doesn't. I'm heading to Footzone!
i am seeing retro running references everywhere today, i swear i saw prefontaine in the gym today, looked just like him! btw, i just ran 3 miles today without stopping, that is the first time in like over 10 yrs i've done that!
Thanks! Got just the pair! Studded sneakers...got to love it. Thanks Julie for asking the question and more power to you for getting out there and continuing to run. You are inspiring me.
Is that pic of you? A current pic? You sure don't look like Sarah Palin now. Good job on the running. A.K.
Hey Anon - you're right. I switched from my Sarah Palin look to my typical middle-aged mom goes running in the morning with bad hair and no makeup look. Again. Just trying to keep things interesting...
